The Five Elements

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water — five movements of energy that describe how the body's organs, emotions, and systems function as one interconnected whole. Health is not the absence of disease. It is balance among all five.

Wood Spring

Wood is the energy of spring — of birth, growth, and upward movement. It governs the Liver and Gallbladder, the free flow of Qi, and our capacity for planning, decision-making, and vision. When Wood is balanced, we move through life with flexibility and purpose; when constrained, we may feel frustration, tension, and stagnation.

Fire Summer

Fire is the energy of summer — expansion, warmth, and connection. It governs the Heart, which houses the Shen (spirit), and expresses itself through joy, laughter, and relationships. In balance, Fire brings vitality and openness of heart; out of balance, it may show as restlessness, anxiety, or sleep disturbance.

Earth Late Summer

Earth is the centre — the energy of late summer, harvest, and nourishment. It governs the Spleen and Stomach, digestion and the transformation of food into Qi and blood. A balanced Earth element grounds us and nourishes both body and mind; imbalance may appear as worry, overthinking, fatigue, or digestive concerns.

Metal Autumn

Metal is the energy of autumn — of refinement, letting go, and finding what is precious. It governs the Lungs and Large Intestine, the breath, the skin, and our protective Wei Qi. In balance, Metal gives clarity, order, and healthy boundaries; imbalance may show as grief that lingers, respiratory issues, or rigidity.

At Quinta Medica, the Five Elements are not an abstraction — they are a clinical map. Where imbalance appears, the cycle shows us where to restore flow.
